Curly Hair Health: A Beginner’s Guide

The reasons why we have curly hair are simultaneously beautiful and endlessly frustrating.

Because curly hair’s follicles are oval-shaped, it means that the normal means of hair lubrication doesn’t work so well. Sebum is supposed to coat and protect our hair as the follicle secretes natural oils. Unfortunately for those of us with curly and wavy hair, this means excessive dryness, breakage, and frizziness.

Are you struggling to get your curls back into shape, and keep them healthy?

You’re in the right place. Don’t miss out on any of these tips and read to the end!

How to Get Healthy Curly Hair Back

You can go crazy trying to keep your curly hair healthy and when you’ve got damage to your mid-length curls. Put those scissors down! Before you do anything drastic, consider these healthy curl rejuvenation tips!

  • Do some research on which curly hair product works best for you
  • Daily apply conditioner and let it rest for a few minutes before your rinse
  • Have a deep conditioner routine and let it soak for at least 15 minutes you rinse
  • Use a t-shirt to reduce frizz and damage, or better yet a microfiber Turbie Twist
  • Keep a hair-healthy diet with omega-3, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc
  • Get regular trims from someone experienced in dealing with curly hair
  • Keep your hands off your curls!
  • Use a hairstyle, like curl-friendly braids, to enhance your curls instead of heat

Keeping these tips in mind will keep your tips healthy and hydrated.

Using conditioner dry is a great way to keep your hair hydrated during the day and frizz-free. Keep some conditioner with you wherever you go for all situations. Just a tiny bit from your mid-length curls to your tips will keep your hair looking fabulous and healthy.

Eating fatty foods with omega-3 fats sounds like it’ll start packing on the pounds, but some of the healthiest foods for your hair are also frequent recommendations for weight-conscious vitamin-rich diets.

Some Things to Avoid

Normal towels can cause a lot of friction and get our hairs tangled in each other. Using a softer material like microfiber or our t-shirts to soak up excess water instead will keep your hair from getting tangled.

This is important since if you do have curls, you shouldn’t brush too much or use a fine-toothed comb. The comb will damage your hair, causing breakage. If you do brush your hair, it’s best to do it in the shower while you’re conditioner is in it.

If you do, you’ll notice your hair has less frizz. Otherwise, leave that brush (and your fingers) away from the curls!

Your Guide to Curly Hair Health

Wavy and curly hair health doesn’t have to be an all-encompassing lifestyle change. Little things go a long way when it comes to your hair. In fact, most of the actions of keeping healthy curly hair are also part of living healthy overall.
