After the University of Wisconsin announced that “private photos” that were “never intended to be shared publicly” were being shared online without the agreement of the individuals involved, the university claimed that the matter involving the women’s volleyball team was being investigated by the police.
In a statement issued late Wednesday, the athletics department confirmed that the UW-Madison Police Department is looking into “multiple crimes” following concerns raised by student-athletes over the images and videos.
“We are aware that private photos and video of UW volleyball student-athletes that were never intended to be shared publicly are being circulated digitally,” stated the university’s statement.
A major and wrongful invasion of the privacy of the student-athletes, as well as possible breaches of university policies and criminal statutes, is the unauthorized sharing.
An image that was supplied by an anonymous source shows several team members celebrating their November 2021 Big Ten championship with their sports bras lifted, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Among the many crimes under investigation by the UWPD is the distribution of private images without permission. The message went on to say that the University of Wisconsin Police Department is not looking into any wrongdoing by the volleyball student-athletes.
“Our top priority is supporting our student-athletes and we are providing them with the appropriate services and resources.”
In response to a question from Fox News Digital on Thursday, UWPD Executive Director of Communications Marc Lovicott stated that the university is “unable to share any additional details” due to an ongoing investigation.
