There are so many great reasons to take Kratom. It’s good for everything from pain relief to relieving anxiety. It can even help boost your concentration and focus.
These are some of the reasons why Kratom gets increasingly popular with each passing year. The rules and legalities around Kratom aren’t uniform or consistent, however.
Here’s what you need to know if you’ve been wondering “Is Kratom legal in Florida?”
Is Kratom Legal In Florida?
To truly understand the answer to the question “Is Kratom legal in Florida?” It helps to have an understanding of what Kratom is and how it functions.
What Is Kratom?
Mitragyna speciosa is Kratom’s scientific name. It’s derived from a tree found natively in Southeast Asia. There’s a long history of being used medicinally for its stimulating, sedative, and psychoactive properties going back centuries.
Traditionally, Kratom leaves are chewed. They can also be dried and made into tea. In small dosages, Kratom is energizing. It helps workers to retain focus and increase productivity. In large doses, it has a sedative-like effect.
How Kratom Works
Kratom contains two compounds that contribute to its psychoactive properties. There’s mitragynine and then there’s 7-α-hydroxy mitragynine. Both interact with opioid receptors to produce a pleasurable sensation as well as pain relief and a sedate feeling.
Kratom’s effects can be felt within a few minutes after ingestion and last for a few hours.
Side Effects of Kratom
Kratom usage can also cause some side effects in some users, which plays a part in its legal status. It’s been known to cause nausea, seizures, and even psychotic reactions in some cases. Constipation and vomiting are two other common side effects.
Consuming Kratom can also cause agitation and confusion as a side effect. Delusions and hallucinations are also sometimes inadvertent symptoms of Kratom ingestion. It can have some physiological effects, as well, including high blood pressure and rapid heart rate.
WebMD warns that taking Kratom in large doses can cause “trouble breathing, brain swelling, seizure, liver damage, and death.” If someone takes Kratom regularly, they may experience some side effects if they stop taking it as well. These include anger, anxiety, hot flashes, and trouble sleeping.
Legal Status Of Kratom
Despite its side effects, Kratom is classified as an herb. This means it can be bought or sold without FDA involvement. This means that Kratom is legal in almost all of Florida. With the caveat that the FDA has not approved it for medical use.
The only exception is Sarasota County. In 2014, Sarasota County passed a local statue declaring Kratom a designer drug. In Sarasota County, possession of Kratom is classified as a misdemeanor.
That means if you live in Florida but not in Sarasota, it’s totally legal and permissible to have and use Kratom. If you’re living in Florida and are looking for places where you can order online, you can find all sorts of options. Even ones that accept unique payment methods.
