Our gardens are our own private oasis away from the madding crowd, a quiet place full of natural beauty where we can relax and unwind after a long day, taking some time to smell the flowers, soak up some sun, or sit in the shade. The garden is a wonderful space to decorate, so here are some of our favorite fun garden ideas to get you inspired!
- Screens – Sometimes in an urban setting there isn’t much opportunity for real privacy, everybody’s garden is right next to everybody else’s garden, with little or no space in between! It’s situations like those where outdoor decorative screens can make all the difference, creating an attractive enclosure while keeping the neighbour’s nose on the other side! These charming screens come in a wide variety of patterns and colours, so it’s easy to find one that will look perfect in your garden while it prevents the outside from looking in!
- Water Features – All the loveliest gardens have lilly ponds, and you can go a step further by constructing a natural-looking waterfall to provide a cheerful splashing sound that will mask the street noise while you sit and watch the pretty goldfish swim. Once you have your hole dug, lay out a sturdy pond liner and the piping necessary for your waterfall’s pump, then hide it all under a sandy bottom and natural stone sides. The lilies and other water plants can be grown in submerged pots, and no one will ever know it’s not a natural wonder except the goldfish, and they aren’t telling!
- Flowers – Yes! Definitely! Every garden should have flowers and lots of them! Be sure to pick out hearty, easy-to-maintain varieties so you can spend your time gazing at them instead of fussing over them! Native species have rightfully become very popular, and come in an incredible variety of shapes and colours. If you really want to take it easy, choose species that naturally grow in your region, they are designed to thrive without your help! One fun look to try is the wall of flowers, in which you plant shorter stature flowers in the front row, then medium-sized blossoms in the middle, followed by tall flowers in the back, it’s a layered look that pleases the eye and is so easy to maintain! It’s the perfect way to disguise an unsightly wall or hide a compost pile behind.
- Topiary – This venerable gardening art involves taking a small-leafed, thick-growing shrub, then clipping and trimming it until it vaguely resembles an animal. It’s as much science as art, and a time-consuming process that takes years to perfect. Our advice? Just go buy a ready-made one at your local fancy garden store, no one will know the difference!
The Australian Government has something to say about almost everything including gardening, so check out the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s webpage on the subject so your garden won’t run afoul of the law of the land! Now, go smell the roses and relax in your wonderful garden!
