Technically, from the moment you get your menstrual period, you’re considered fertile. This time ends when you go through menopause, which is when your ovaries essentially retire. This happens when you haven’t gotten your period for a whole year.
So for many women, this means their reproductive years can span from their early teenage years to their 50s.
The Optimal Years to Get Pregnant
Having children while you’re still in your teens isn’t usually a good situation, nor is it when you’re nearing your 50s and don’t have as much energy and time to spend with kids.
The good news is, your fertility remains relatively unchanged until you get to your early to mid-30s. So if you aim to try for a baby in your late 20s or early 30s, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most women. For a smaller window, aim for between 19 to 26.
Do note that while your fertility can still be good after age 35, there’s a much higher chance of pregnancy complications. For example, you’re at an increased risk of preterm delivery, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, and gestational diabetes. So if you want to conceive after 35, it’s best to speak to a doctor first to assess your risks and possible outcomes.
What if You’ve Had Your Tubes Tied?
Many women think that if they’ve had their tubes tied, they can never have children again. However, this isn’t true.
With both vasectomies and tubal ligations, you can reverse them. The chance of a successful reversal for the latter is higher, but you can still have a very good chance of conceiving if you’re of childbearing age.
