Five points to check when choosing a mattress
It is not so much the technology used – latex, springs or foam – that counts, it would even be of little importance according to sleep specialists. We must rather focus on the intrinsic qualities of the mattress, without forgetting that the box spring provides a good part of the ventilation of its bedding. It is better that it matches the mattress and, if it is slatted, that these are fairly tight: the less the slats are spaced, the better the support.
Firmness: neither too soft nor too hard
The idea that a very firm mattress would be good for the back, or even that a board between the mattress and the box spring would fix everything is not well founded, quite the contrary. If you move a lot during the night and suffer from inflammatory pain, you will spend your time waking it up on a mattress that harshly accommodates the pressure points of the body. Comfort: certain softness
Whatever technique is used, this is the formula to remember. A first impression of comfort, with a certain softness; a second feeling of correct holding of all parts of the body, especially on its pressure points such as the shoulders, gluts, etc. This is the objective to be sought. Without neglecting the thickness of the mattress: the higher its density, the better it will absorb the “shocks” of night movements.
This is a dimension that we hardly think about, yet it is essential: the mattress must allow good regulation of the body temperature to ensure satisfactory sleep. If you are too hot, you sleep poorly, and the pain threshold is modified. Likewise if you shiver. Natural materials (wool, cotton) generally provide better heat exchange.
The right dimensions
We must beware of adopting too small dimensions for the choice of bedding, even if the space in which we will install it is not very large. On average, the French have 140 cm wide beds. It is strongly advised to go to 160 and even 180 cm. If one of the two partners moves a lot, he will inevitably alter the quality of sleep of the other and accentuate his pains by modifying by his movements the comfort in which his partner was installed.
Springs for dynamic or homogeneous support
