It’s no secret that spending time in the sun can be good for your health. In fact, research has shown that getting regular exposure to sunlight can help boost your mood, improve your sleep, and even give your immune system a boost. However, it can be difficult to get the sunlight you need if you spend most of your time indoors. Luckily, you can do a few simple things to get more sunlight in your home.

1. Open Your Blinds and Curtains

The simplest way to get more sunlight in your home is to open up your blinds and curtains during the day. This will allow sunlight to enter your home and help brighten up the space. If you have reflective window coverings, such as aluminum blinds, you may even find that they help bounce sunlight around the room and make it feel even brighter. You can also consider getting curtains that allow some sunlight in, even if they are closed, like sheer curtains. These are perfect for homes that face busy streets or get a lot of direct sunlight, as they will still allow you to enjoy the benefits of sunlight without being exposed or blinded by the sun.

2. Let the Sunshine In

Take it another step further by opening up those windows themselves. Another easy way to get more sunlight in your home is to simply let the sunshine in by opening up your doors. If you have a door that opens up to a patio or balcony, open it up during the day to let in natural light. You may also want to consider opening up interior doors to help distribute sunlight throughout your home. If you often forget to open the doors and windows to let the sunshine in, consider adding some potted plants to help remind you to do so. Having plants in the room also helps to improve indoor air quality, so it’s a win-win.

3. Move Furniture Around

By moving your furniture away from the windows, you can get more sunlight in rooms or spots where you previously thought that wasn’t possible. If there are certain areas of your home that don’t seem to get much sunlight, try moving furniture around to see if that makes a difference. For example, if you have a piece of furniture blocking a window, try moving it to see if that allows more light into the room. You may also want to rearrange furniture so that it’s not blocking any doors that could be letting in light from another room. This will allow sunlight to enter the room more easily and make the space feel brighter as a result.

4. Add Mirrors

If you have large pieces of furniture that can’t be moved, try hanging a mirror on the wall opposite the window to help reflect sunlight around the room. Mirrors are a great way to reflect light and make a space feel brighter and more open. If you want to add more light to a particular room in your home that struggles to get sun, try hanging a mirror on a wall or placing one on a shelf or table near a window. You may even want to consider using multiple mirrors to create a “mirror maze” effect that will help reflect even more light around the room. Just make sure not to overdo it, as too many mirrors in one room can be overwhelming.

5. Put in a Skylight

What’s a skylight? A skylight is a window installed on your roof that brings sunlight in from above, much like a car sunroof. Skylights are a great way to add natural light to any room in your home, especially if you live in a place with long winters and limited daylight hours. They can help brighten up any room, even one with windows blocked by other buildings. If you’re concerned about the amount of heat a skylight brings, look into some materials used to help keep heat out. Aside from window film, another example that can lower up to 60% of heat transmission is a polycarbonate sheet. Companies like Polylite offer a wide variety of products that can help in both residential and commercial applications.

If you’re looking for ways to get more sunlight in your home, there are plenty of options available. From opening up blinds and curtains during the day to adding mirrors or new roofing, there are many simple ways that you can let daylight into your home. Try out some of these tips and see how they work for you!
