If you’re a makeup connoisseur, you’re going to want to pay attention. The increasing sale of fake eyelashes means two things: 1) More people are buying fake eyelashes and 2) people are buying higher quality fake eyelashes.
In other words, you’re going to see more gorgeous, luscious fake eyelashes on the scene than ever before. Chances are, you’re probably going to want to give them a shot, yourself.
If you’re new to fake eyelashes, this can seem a bit daunting. Never fear! Read on for our step-by-step guide to applying fake eyelashes.
Step 1: Buy Your Supplies
Alright, first thing’s first: you’re going to need to do some shopping.
If you’re a makeup lover, you probably already have a nice pair of tweezers, which is a good start. Keep in mind that you’ll want a pair with a slanted edge to give you a better grip on your fake eyelashes.
In addition, you will need to buy fake eyelashes (duh) and lash glue (aka lash adhesive). Most of the time, these products are sold separately, so make sure you definitely have the glue before you get started.
Step 2: Cut Your Fake Eyelashes Down to Size
We all have different eye shapes and sizes, so naturally your fake eyelashes won’t be made to fit. The solution is simple! You’ll need to cut them down to size.
First, hold the fake eyelashes to your eye along your natural lash line. To keep it natural, you won’t want the fake eyelashes to extend all the way to your inner corner.
Give your fake eyelashes a pinch at the cutoff spot and give them a snip–not while they’re still close to your eyes, please! Hold on to those excess pieces, as you may want to use them to create extra thickness.
Step 3: Get Comfortable With Your Lash Glue
Lash glue can be tricky to apply, so give yourself a chance to make mistakes here. (In fact, if you’re a total newbie, we recommend starting with a cheaper set of falsies. That way, if anything goes awry, you don’t feel like you’ve just flushed money down the drain.)
Apply a thin layer of glue to the lash band and wait about 30 seconds before placing the lashes on your lid. This allows the glue to become tacky, rather than goopy.
Pro tip: Bring the outside corners together and make them “kiss” before applying. This ensures that you have glue all the way out to the edges of the band, and won’t experience awkward peeling later.
Step 4: Get Into Application Position
There is a way to position both your eyes and your mirror that will set you up for success. In fact, you want the mirror to be almost perpendicular to your chin.
Why? When your mirror is below your face, rather than directly ahead, it forces you to gaze downward. This extends your eyelid without causing you to close your eyes–and you don’t want to close your eyes during application. Your eyelid actually takes on a different shape when it’s closed!
To clarify, you want to position your makeup mirror below your face and keep your face pointed straight ahead. Look down into the mirror with your eyes, not your whole face.
Step 5: Deep Breath! Apply Your Fake Eyelashes
Now for the moment of truth! It’s time to apply your fake eyelashes.
Once you have some experience behind you, you may be able to ditch the tweezers and apply your fake eyelashes with your fingers. For now, we suggest keeping the tweezers handy to help you maneuver the thin band.
The goal is to get the fake eyelashes flush with your natural eyelashes. The band, itself, should be flush with your eyelid directly above your natural lash line.
Unfortunately, there are no secrets or tricks that will make this part easier. The mirror position will help, but a lot of it comes down to practice. Don’t forget to use your tweezers to help adjust your fake eyelashes and get the band to stick along the curve of your lash line without coming loose.
(Remember the excess pieces you saved? You can add these to the outer corners of your lash line to create a dramatic flare!)
Step 6: Hide the Band
Once your fake eyelashes are applied in the proper position, it’s time to blend them in with the rest of your makeup! Some people do apply mascara to their fake eyelashes, but when you have high quality lashes, you really won’t need to. Instead, it’s time to grab your eyeliner.
Without eyeliner, the band of your fake eyelashes will be visible. Whether you want to use a thin, understated line or a thick wing, a bit of mascara will help disguise that band and make your fake eyelashes look more natural.
