5 Reasons to Stop Carrying Cash

When was the last time you used cash to make a purchase?

For more people, carrying cash is becoming less useful. It’s hard to track spending when you carry cash, and it’s easy to misplace your money. Plus, credit cards and debit cards offer many benefits that aren’t available with cash.

Learn why you should stop carrying cash altogether. Read on to stay informed about how you spend your money.

1. Losing Your Wallet Is Not as Big a Deal if You Don’t Carry Cash

Losing your wallet is a huge hassle, but it’s only financially detrimental if you carry a lot of cash in your wallet. It doesn’t cost much to replace your license, credit cards and debit cards. However, there’s no way to replace cash if you lose that in your wallet as well.

Most banks will replace your credit cards and debit cards for free. You’ll be able to report your cards as lost so that nobody can spend any of your money. Once cash is lost, however, it’s gone for good.

2. Carrying Cash Makes You More of a Target for Thieves

When you use credit cards and debit cards to pay for things, nobody around you will know how much money you have. If you’re pulling out large wads of cash to pay for items at the store, however, everyone around you can see that you’ve got a lot of money on your person. This makes you an easy target for thieves who have seen that you have a lot of money on you.

3. Carrying Cash Makes It Harder to Track Your Spending

One of the biggest benefits of deciding to go cashless is that it’s far easier to track your spending. When you pull cash out of the ATM and spend it around town, the only way to track and categorize your spending is to write down all of your purchases.

If you only make purchases on debit cards or credit cards, you can simply check your banking app at the end of the week to see what you purchased and how much you spent. You can even use third-party apps that connect to your bank account and show your pending in detailed breakdowns.

4. Many Businesses No Longer Accept Cash

The COVID-19 pandemic made some businesses reimagine the way they took payment. Many businesses began using touchless payment systems that only worked with a card or with phone payments.

Now, some businesses are continuing to have the policy of no more cash. Even one of America’s largest music festivals, Summerfest, recently announced that they are going cashless in 2021.

5. You Can’t Get the Benefits of Cards When You Only Use Cash

When you use a credit card for your purchases, you can earn points that are redeemable as statement credits or cashback. Some credit cards even offer insurance protection on large purchases that are made with a credit card. No such benefits exist with cash payments.

You’re Ready to Stop Using Cash Completely

When you consider all the benefits of using credit and debit cards, it’s easy to see why it’s a good idea to stop carrying cash.
